NPF

Originally, formed in 2003 by Bilha Chesner Fish, MD as the Nassau Women Physicians’ Foundation, the association was expanded by Dr. Fish in 2005 to become the Nassau Physicians’ Foundation.  The decision to open membership to all Nassau County physicians was deemed necessary and important based upon the many requests from male physicians who shared our vision. Accordingly, our mission which remains unchanged, is as follows:

Mission Statement:

NPF exists to provide a stimulating environment for physicians who are drawing strength from their passion and who are willing to enrich each other’s lives.

We are partners with the community in which we live and are committed to donating our time and expertise to educational and charitable endeavors.

We pledge to be proactive to pertinent and current health issues.

Since early in the organization’s history, NPF has sponsored annual fundraisers to benefit medical research for a specific cause chosen by our board members. The honorees have been some of the most respected and renowned physicians in the respective areas of specialization. Our past charitable endeavors have raised significant funds for the following themes and our have celebrated the accomplishments of the honorees named below.

2005 Cardiac Research for Women
Dr. Nieca Goldberg of Lennox Hill Hospital
2006 Stroke Research for Women
Dr. Ralph Sacco and Dr. Tatjana Rundek of Columbia University
2007 Alzheimer’s Research
Dr. Richard Mayeux and Dr. Karen Marder of the Taub Institute at Columbia University
2008 The American Cancer Society
Dr. Charles Conte and Dr. James Sullivan of North Shore LIJ Health System, and
Dr. Bilha Fish of Manhasset Diagnostic Imaging
2009 Children with Autism
Dr. Nathaniel Heintz of Rockefeller University and
Dr. John C. Pomeroy of the Cody Center at Stony Brook University

Our upcoming 2010 fundraising gala will focus on supporting research for chronic lymphocytic leukemia and establishing an association with Hofstra University’s School of Medicine to support medical student education.  This year we will honor Dr. Kanti R. Rai, MD with the Medical Research Award; Dr. Lawrence G. Smith, MD with the Physician of Distinction Award; and  Mr. Syd Mandelbaum, MA, MBA  with the Humanitarian Award. The gala will be held Friday, April 16, 2010.

In conjunction with our commitment to the community, NPF also participates in Pathways Women’s Health Complimentary Seminar Series in offering medical lectures as a community service. Initiated in 1995 by Dr. Bilha Fish, Director of Pathways and President of NPF, the community service program was the first of its kind on Long Island offered by a private practitioner. The basis of the program is to provide accurate medical information with which individuals can make informed choices. Given the changes in health insurance resulting in abbreviated contact with physicians, these seminars present a unique opportunity for individuals to gain a greater understanding of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various medical conditions. This program is highly valued by the community it serves and has been hailed for its contribution to health education by such organizations as the Town of Hempstead, About Face, Nassau County League of Women Voters, NOW, and Working Women magazine.

Additionally, NPF participated in the petition to Congress to extend a woman’s hospital stay following mastectomy surgery. NPF intends to remain pro-active in health issues.

Sincerely,
Bilha Chesner Fish, MD, President
